Today, there are many complications of the coronavirus (Covid-19), and it should be noted that the fact that this disease is difficult for obese people, leaves various serious complications, and also aggravates existing diseases in the joints remains one of the urgent problems. The article examines the relationship between obesity and osteoarthritis in patients with coronavirus (COVID-19) infection. The causes of obesity contributing to the rapid development of osteoarthritis after coronavirus infection and reducing the quality of life of patients have been described. Increased adipokines and pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-6) after infection with COVID-19 contribute to joint damage and OA development. The best-known adipokines, the leptin and adiponectin receptors, are present on various types of joint cells, including subchondral osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and synoviocytes. Depending on the concentration, adiponectin plays both a catabolic and anabolic role. This adipokine increases the expression of matrix metalloproteinases, and at low concentrations, chondrocyte proliferation and proteoglycan production are observed. The conclusion is that adipokines in low concentration are beneficial for the joint, but in patients with coronavirus infection, its amount increases, which affects the function of the joint and increases the development of osteoarthrosis.
