Rezume
The vitreous body is a gel-like transparent formation that occupies a significant volume in the eyeball (more than 80% of the volume), but is still the least studied. The paucity of information about VB is primarily due to its anatomical structure and function. The researchers were able to prove the role of VB in the development of hemophthalmos, traction retinal detachments and traction maculopathies in proliferative DR (Nawaz I.M. et al., 2019; Ophir A. et al., 2010; Gabriel RS. Et al., 2020). However, a number of histological studies demonstrate changes in VB in diabetes long before the development of retinal lesions (Gale, J. et al., 2014). The disadvantage of such studies is the fact that they are conducted post-mortem or against the background of experimental alloxan or streptosycin diabetes in animals. In all three cases, the detected changes in VB can be questioned.
