Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is synthesized under physiological conditions from methionine. Normally, the concentration of homocysteine in the blood serum is 5 – 15 µmol /l. During life, the average level of homocysteine can increase by 3 – 5 µmol / l. A serum homocysteine level of more than 16 µmol /l significantly increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Hyperhomocysteinemia is a marker of kidney dysfunction and an independent risk factor for stroke. The article describes the role of homocysteine and the problem of hyperhomocysteinemia in the development of cognitive impairment in cerebrovascular diseases and chronic ischemic ischemia.
Keywords. Homocysteine, amino acid, hyperhomocysteinemia, cerebrovascular disease.
