Resume

Echinococcal disease is one of the current zoonoses found in Central Asia. This is a parasitic disease most often caused by Echinococcus granulosus, a flatworm. Due to the large number of registered cases of the disease in humans and animals in the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as due to the prevalence of the disease in some regions, the country is considered endemic. Echinococcal cysts affect the liver and lungs, but fewer than 100 cases of rib echinococcosis have been reported in the literature. We observed a casuistic case of isolated echinococcal lesion of the rib in a 17-year-old patient, which led us to a more in-depth study of this pathology. Based on our retrospective analysis, the first such case reported was reported in Germany [9]. We analyzed published cases up to 2022 on the PubMed and Elsevier platforms; we found a total of 18 patients with this pathology over the past 25 years of published materials.

Diagnosis of the disease of the affected organs is relatively simple, however, cases of atypical localization of cysts can be difficult to diagnose, as is the case with echinococcosis of the rib. Diagnostic imaging techniques can differentiate the pathology, but in rare cases the diagnosis remains uncertain before surgery, as in our case.

Key words: Echinococcosis of the rib; Rib cyst; Echinococcosis; Cestodosis of bones; Echinococcal cyst; Isolated damage to the ribs;
