Resume
Diabetes mellitus (DM), diagnosed after a coronavirus infection, is the subject of research to clarify the type of diabetes and the characteristics of its course.
The purpose of our study was to examine the type of diabetes diagnosed after COVID-19, the time before its onset, and the characteristics of the course of the disease.
Materials and methods. We examined 70 patients with diabetes diagnosed in 2020-2021 after a documented coronavirus infection, including 28 children and 42 adult patients. As a comparison group, the analysis included 118 patients with type 2 diabetes and 5 patients with type 1 diabetes who had diabetes diagnosed earlier than 2020 and who suffered coronavirus infection at the same time – in 2020. The levels of glycated hemoglobin, IL-6, C-peptide, and diabetes-specific antibodies were determined.
Results. All children were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, 16.7% of adults had type 1 diabetes, 78.6% had type 2 diabetes, 4.8% had LADA. New cases of diabetes among adults are observed on average 5.4 months after COVID-19, but more often diabetes was diagnosed at 1 month after COVID-19, the second slight rise in the disease occurred at 3-6 months, the next highest peak in diabetes occurred at 15th month after suffering from COVID-19, which coincides with the peak rise in the level of antibodies to GAD and insulin during these periods. Patients with post-Covid diabetes are characterized by young age, normal blood pressure and body mass index, decreased secretory capacity of pancreatic beta cells and the presence of diabetes-specific autoantibodies.
Conclusion. Diabetes mellitus can develop for at least 2 years after a coronavirus infection. After a coronavirus infection, glycemic control is necessary for 24 months after recovery in order to timely detect hyperglycemia.
