Resume
Burning pains in the face-mouth cavity often force patients to consult different doctors. When examining the oral cavity, caries, pulpitis or periodontitis and other dental diseases can be detected. However, the cause of burning pains in the mucous membrane of the mouth, tongue, lips are not dental diseases. In most of these cases, doctors face the problem of glossalgia/glossodynia. This syndrome is called “burning mouth syndrome” because of the burning sensation in the mucous membrane of the mouth, tongue and lips. The number of patients with glossodynia is increasing every year. The variety of symptoms and the lack of clinical manifestations make the differential diagnosis of glossalgia even more complicated. The severe course and chronic relapsing nature of the disease reduce the level and quality of life of patients and require special approaches to diagnosis, and most importantly, effective treatment methods. Etiology, pathogenesis and treatment of glossodynia remain relevant even now, because these problems are still not sufficiently studied. The article discusses glossalgia/glossodynia terminology, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis and treatment issues in detail.
Key words: glossalgia, glossodynia, stomalgia, pain in the face-mouth area, damage to the mucous membrane of the oral cavity.
