DIETARY MODELS AND PROGRESSION OF CKD

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and their doctors are looking for ways to reduce the risk of progression of CKD and related complications. Emerging evidence suggests that dietary changes may be a useful adjuvant approach to reducing the risk of adverse CKD outcomes. This review focuses on several different dietary patterns, including dietary approaches to control hypertension and the Mediterranean diet, and their benefits for kidney health. We discuss how a healthy diet reduces acid load and how improving diet quality can slow the progression of CKD. We also discuss some of the barriers that may prevent disadvantaged people from following a healthy diet. Dietary patterns with a low acid load may slow the progression of CKD. Available evidence suggests that reducing dietary acid load may be beneficial for patients with CKD, but the superiority of any specific diet has not yet been established. Additional randomized controlled dietary interventions among patients with CKD are needed to inform evidence-based recommendations that can be tailored to individual preferences and ability to access healthy foods.
