MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ABORTIVE MATERIAL FROM UNDERDEVELOPED PREGNANCIES RELATED TO COVID-19

Objective: To study the morphological characteristics of abortive material tissues from underdeveloped pregnancies associated with COVID-19 in women. Materials and Methods: The study included 80 women diagnosed with underdeveloped pregnancies related to COVID-19, ranging from 5 to 12 weeks of gestation. They were divided into two main groups according to the gestational age and the method of termination used. Group I included 40 women with underdeveloped pregnancies at 5-6 weeks gestation, who underwent vacuum abortions, and Group II included 40 women at 10-12 weeks gestation, who underwent medical abortions. A control group consisted of 20 women with unwanted pregnancies at 6-12 weeks of gestation. All women underwent clinical-laboratory and instrumental examinations, as well as morphological studies of the abortive material. Results: The analysis of the study results showed that 80% of the women with underdeveloped pregnancies related to COVID-19 exhibited significant pathomorphological changes in the tissues of the abortive material characteristic of the SARS-Cov-2 virus. Specifically, morphological studies of the abortive material from pregnancies terminated at 5-6 weeks and 10-12 weeks by vacuum and medical methods, respectively, revealed foci of leukocyte infiltration, marked vascular congestion, and diapedesis bleeding spots. These findings indicate the negative impact of the coronavirus infection on the fetus, namely, the penetration of the SARS-Cov-2 virus into the fetal tissues causing damage and halting the development of the pregnancy. Conclusion: The results of studying the morphological characteristics of abortive material from underdeveloped pregnancies related to COVID-19 confirmed the pathomorphological changes associated with coronavirus infection, particularly during the early stages of pregnancy when COVID-19 infection occurs, often leading to the cessation of pregnancy development. The morphological study of the abortive tissues indicates the detrimental effect of the coronavirus infection on the fetus, whereby the SARS-Cov-2 virus penetrates the fetal tissues, causing damage and stopping the pregnancy's development.
