Resume

This article presents the latest advances in the experimental and clinical study of the etiopathogenesis of keratoconus and the main existing hypotheses associated with the occurrence and risk factors for the development of this pathology. Keratoconus is a serious chronic eye disease, which primarily occurs due to a hereditary factor, affects both eyes and has become especially relevant in recent years. Corneal dystrophy leads to thinning and deformation of all layers with the formation of a cone-shaped protrusion and the further appearance of various opacities, which creates a socially significant problem, especially for the regions of the South, because under the influence of this disease young workers become disabled. In the course of covering the problem, all the key theories of the occurrence of keratoconus are touched upon, including hereditary, endocrine, metabolic, immunological and allergic, which indicates the multifactorial development of the pathology. Another important topic when discussing the risk of developing keratoconus is race. Keratoconus (KK) is more common among representatives of the southern and mountainous regions, as well as among the Mongoloid race. This is due to the known location and reproduction based on isolation, homogeneity and a higher level of relatedness. Late detection of keratoconus entails the risk of consequences of keratorefractive surgery and progression of the disease.

Key words: keratoconus, epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, diagnostic methods.
