Resume
The levels of zinc in blood serum, hair, and atherosclerotic plaques of the carotid artery, as well as the concentrations of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) in serum, were studied in patients with carotid atherosclerosis without symptoms and in those who had suffered a stroke. In patients with carotid atherosclerosis who had suffered a stroke, the TIMP-1 level in serum was higher than in patients without symptoms. In patients with symptomatic carotid atherosclerosis, the zinc level in serum and atherosclerotic plaques was lower than in patients without symptoms. This confirms the significant role of zinc levels in biological samples in the pathogenesis of carotid atherosclerosis complications. An increase in blood glucose concentration is accompanied by a decrease in zinc levels in hair. As the MMP-9 level in blood rises, the zinc concentration in serum increases, while in hair, it decreases.
