Resume

This study investigated the levels of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) in the blood serum of patients with carotid atherosclerosis. In patients with unstable atherosclerotic plaques in the carotid artery (according to histological analysis), an imbalance between MMP-9 and TIMP-1 was observed. Elevated serum levels of MMP-9, TIMP-1, and their ratio were detected in these patients.
