Resume

Metabolic syndrome (MS) in school-age children is an urgent health problem, especially in emerging economies. One of the factors contributing to its development is ascariasis, a common parasitic infection. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of ascariasis on the development of MS in school-age children. The study included a clinical and laboratory examination of 200 children aged 7-14 years, of whom 100 were infected with Ascaris lumbricoides, and 100 were healthy. The results showed that infected children had higher levels of insulin, total cholesterol and triglycerides, as well as lower levels of high-density lipoproteins compared to the control group. Ascariasis can contribute to the development of MS in children, which underscores the need to include preventive measures against parasitic infections in MS prevention programs

Key words: metabolic syndrome, ascariasis, insulin, cholesterol, lipoproteins, prevention
