CLINICAL AND LABORATORY FEATURES OF CANDIDAL ESOPHAGITIS IN IMMUNODEFICIENT PATIENTS

Resume

Candidiasis esophagitis (CE) is a frequent opportunistic esophageal infection occurring predominantly in immunodeficient patients. The aim of the present study was to identify clinical and laboratory features of the course of CE in patients with various forms of secondary immunodeficiency (HIV infection, chemotherapy, transplantation, systemic diseases). The study included 72 patients with a verified diagnosis of candidal esophagitis. Clinical evaluation, esophagoscopy, mycologic examination and immune status analysis were performed. A direct correlation between the severity of immunodeficiency and the severity of clinical manifestations of CE was established. In patients with HIV infection the disease was characterized by a more severe course, extensive mucosal lesions and a high level of fungal load. The obtained data indicate the need for early diagnosis and individualized approach to the treatment of this pathology in patients with immunodeficiency
