Resume
There have been no major breakthroughs in our understanding of the pathophysiology and therapy of urolithiasis over the past two decades. The disease continues to be a challenge for patients, clinicians, and health care systems. In this context, epidemiological studies aim to elucidate worldwide changes in disease patterns and severity and to identify modifiable risk factors that contribute to the development of kidney stones. Our expanding knowledge of the epidemiology of urolithiasis is of paramount importance and will greatly improve the current management of this disease. In this article, we review variables influencing prevalence and incidence, including age, sex, race, ethnicity, occupation, climate, geography, and related to kidney stones.
Keywords: urolithiasis, nephrolithiasis.
