Resume
Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) is one of the most common autoimmune diseases affecting the thyroid gland with thyroid-specific autoantibodies, characterized by lymphocytic infiltration and the development of hypothyroidism. Although the exact etiology is not fully understood, AIT is associated with the interaction of genetic elements, environmental factors, and epigenetic influences. Vitamin D, which is an important micronutrient in our body, besides participating in the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus, performs an immunomodulatory function and, apparently, promotes immune tolerance. The purpose of this study is to conduct a review analysis of the relationship between vitamin D levels and AIT. There is extensive literature confirming that patients with AIT have significantly lower vitamin D levels than healthy people. The principle of action underlying this phenomenon is still unknown, so it is necessary to clarify the role and mechanism of action of vitamin D in the occurrence and development of AIT. This knowledge will help develop intervention and early treatment strategies for patients with AIT who have low vitamin D levels.
Key words: autoimmune thyroiditis, interleukins, vitamin D, thyroglobulin antibodies, thyroid peroxidase antibodies, autoimmunity, immune cells.
