STRUCTURAL CHANGES IN THE TESTES WITH IRON DEFICIENCY

Resume

This article presents the results of a morphological and morphometric study of the testes of six-month-old rats with iron deficiency. A standard diet (C1000) and an iron-deficient diet (C1038) were used in the experiment. Iron deficiency is associated with thickening of the tunica albuginea, dilation of the lumen of the convoluted seminiferous tubules, marked thinning of the spermatogenic epithelium, a decrease in the number of spermatogonia and, in particular, round spermatids, a decrease in the number of spermatozoa in the lumen, and a reduction in Leydig cell density. These changes are accompanied by increased oxidative stress and decreased spermatogenesis. The data obtained confirm a significant impairment of spermatogenesis in iron deficiency.
