Resume

Shigellosis, characterized by the frequent passage of loose stools mixed with visible blood (hemocolitis) accompanied by fever, abdominal cramps, and tenesmus, is an acute bacterial intestinal infectious disease that important cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly in children below 5 years of age in developing countries. Shigella is usually spread by the fecal-oral route and ingestion of contaminated water or food, such as milk. Disease caused by this bacterium ranges from a mild, self-limited diarrhea to a more severe disease namely bacillary dysentery, which is characterized by the destruction of the colonic mucosa. Vaccination is not available and, therefore, prevention of exposure to this microorganism is paramount. Hygienic measures including hand washing with soap before food manipulation, effective water or food treatment such as pasteurization or cooking are essential to diminish the high burden of shigellosis.
