IMPACT OF ACUTE IONIZING RADIATION ON PATHOMORPHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN THE KIDNEYS OF WHITE OUTBRED RATS

This study investigated the effects of acute ionizing radiation on pathomorphological changes in the kidney tissue of white outbred rats. Histological preparations obtained from the kidneys of laboratory animals exposed to a single total dose of 5 Gray were examined microscopically. The results revealed several pathological features, including pale pink coloration of the medullary epithelium, hydropic degeneration and focal necrotic lesions in tubular epithelium, deformation of renal glomeruli, as well as congestion of subcapsular and perilobular vessels. Narrowing of Bowman’s space and accumulation of homogeneous protein masses within proximal tubules indicated marked impairment of renal filtration and reabsorption functions. The absence of such changes in intact animals confirms the significant structural damage caused by acute radiation exposure. These findings provide an important scientific basis for a deeper understanding of morphological processes that develop under short-term, high-dose ionizing radiation.
