Resume
Background. The histological study of the placenta in understanding the causes of antenatal fetal death (AFD) is growing. Objective. To compare the histological picture of placentas in antenatal fetal death at 28-366 weeks of full-term pregnancy and live birth. Materials and methods. The study group included patients with antenatal fetal death at 28-366 weeks of gestation, while the control group included women who delivered a live fetus. All subjects were primiparous. We examined clinical and anamnestic risk factors for antenatal death, as well as microscopic data from the placentas in each of the two groups—stillborn and liveborn—and compared the prevalence of each placental finding in the two groups. Results. Statistically significant histological changes associated with antenatal fetal death included placental hypoplasia, placental hyperplasia, precocious and immature chorionic villosis, and multiple placental infarcts. Conclusion. Histological examination of the placenta may help in establishing the cause of AFD, and understanding the pathophysiology of placental insufficiency may improve perinatal outcomes in women at high risk of AFD.
