CYTOMORPHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN THE BONE MARROW IN DIFFUSE TOXIC GOITER

Resume

The article provides a detailed assessment of cytomorphological changes in the bone marrow and hormonal alterations associated with diffuse toxic goiter. The obtained results convincingly demonstrate that the principal pathogenic mechanisms underlying the development of anemia in patients with diffuse toxic goiter are inflammation-mediated iron sequestration (driven by the action of hepcidin) and the cytotoxic damage exerted by thyroid hormones on the hematopoietic microenvironment. These findings fully substantiate the pivotal role of these mechanisms as the leading pathogenetic links in the development of anemia associated with diffuse toxic goiter.
