Resume
Periodontal diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis) are among the leading causes of tooth loss in adults, and their treatment requires not only a one-time procedure but also a long-term management strategy. Current concepts view periodontitis as a chronic inflammatory process beginning with a dysbiotic biofilm (microbial biofilm); its incidence and severity largely depend on risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, oral hygiene, and patient compliance. Therefore, a stepwise treatment model is preferred in practice: (1) diagnosis and disease stage/extent assessment, (2) patient education and risk factor management, (3) professional non-surgical therapy (scaling and root planing) and re-evaluation, (4) surgical and regenerative procedures when necessary, (5) stabilization of the result with supportive periodontal therapy (SPT). In severe cases, after the inflammation has subsided, orthopedic rehabilitation (braces, occlusion correction, prosthetics) is performed to restore functional impairment according to plan.
Keywords: periodontitis, gingivitis, stage and degree, biofilm, scaling, regeneration, maintenance therapy, orthopedic rehabilitation.
