Resume
In individuals consuming groundwater with high total mineralization, morphofunctional alterations of the major salivary glands, as well as disturbances in the local immune system of the oral cavity, may be observed. Under such conditions, the use of biologically active plant-derived agents, particularly asparagus extract (Asparagus officinalis), may exert a beneficial effect. Due to its bioactive constituents (flavonoids, saponins, and vitamins), asparagus may enhance metabolic processes in salivary gland tissues, strengthen antioxidant defense mechanisms, and normalize the immune response of the oral mucosa. These effects potentially contribute to the partial mitigation of the adverse impacts associated with highly mineralized groundwater.
