Diagnostic angiography was first performed in humans by Moniz in 1927 (Nath 2006), but was not widely used until Seldinger facilitated a safer method via a flexible catheter rather than direct needle access in 1953 (Seldinger 1953). Since then, invasive diagnostic angiography has rapidly become used, and subsequent therapeutic interventions are now performed in almost every vascular bed. In 1974, the first reports of magnetic resonance imaging (MRT) were published (Macovski 2009), which soon became part of the radiologist's arsenal of tools for imaging the body and eventually its vasculature. In recent years, noninvasive imaging (through ultrasound, X-ray computed tomography [CT], and MRI) has reduced the frequency of diagnostic angiography, which is now largely reserved for high-risk patients and certain or high-probability cases. intervention (Saloner 1995). Scientists such as Brian Ghoshhajra, Leif-Christopher Engel and T. Gregory have covered the importance and technique of MRA in their scientific articles. (Research gate March 2012). Thus, while the role of the diagnostic radiologist has been redefined, the development has facilitated the growth of subspecialization in interventional radiology by improving planning and postprocedural management. Today, magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is widely used and is the standard of care for many diagnoses in the neurological system, and is becoming the first-line test in many centers for imaging of peripheral vessels, imaging of large vessels, etc. . in some cases it can even be used for palpation, allowing non-invasive coronary MR angiography for selected applications. This chapter reviews the basic forms of MRA organized by pulse sequence and image type (technical considerations), followed by examples of these techniques performed in each body system.
