Resume
This study was conducted in 98 patients with diaphyseal fractures of the tibial bones as part of polytrauma. The patients were divided into a main group and two control groups. In the main group, temporary fixation of the tibial bones was performed using a rod-based external fixation device, and after stabilization of the patients’ condition, a procedure of locked intramedullary osteosynthesis was carried out. In the first control group, primary fixation was achieved by crossed wire insertion followed by external immobilization, while in the second control group an Ilizarov apparatus consisting of two rings was applied. Accordingly, in the first control group, the final stage of treatment was locked intramedullary osteosynthesis, whereas in the second control group osteosynthesis was performed using a four-ring compression–distraction apparatus. Patients in the main group recovered faster compared with those in the control groups.
